EV charging specialist Park’n Plug has been at the forefront of France’s electric mobility revolution since 2011. The company installs and manages turnkey charging stations in car parks that serve communal sites such as apartment blocks, offices, and public buildings.
Park’n Plug’s goal is to support the rapid development of electric mobility through widening the availability of fast and reliable charging solutions. Its proprietary system uses NFC tags in drivers’ smartphones to authorize access and enable payment. Each charging point communicates with Park’n Plug’s management system, sending data via a gateway that connects wirelessly to its server using a variety of technologies, including Wi-Fi and cellular.
The success of the Park’n Plug system requires dependable IoT connectivity. Any service outages will leave drivers frustrated and leave operators unaware about the efficiency of their installation and process.
Having originally opted for an IoT connectivity solution provided by a major national mobile network operator, Park’n Plug wasn’t satisfied with the service. “The experience wasn’t very good, and we were having trouble with charging stations in underground car parks being disconnected,” explains Olivier Toggenburger. This motivated the team to seek an alternative provider that would be a better match – one that specialized exclusively in IoT connectivity.

It also shares with its customers vital data on how much energy is being used per person, per car, and per site, enabling them to optimize the use of resources and plan accurately for future needs.
Today, Park’n Plug operates 350 sites, 80% of which are in Paris, with a total of around 6,000 connected charging points. It has grand plans for expansion, intending to activate up to 700 more sites over the next few years.
“We expect that in 10 years’ time 50% of vehicles in France will be electric, influenced by government incentives and environmental regulations. Historical energy suppliers are not well structured for installing and managing communal charging infrastructure, which puts us in a really strong position to take advantage of the rising demand.” predicts Olivier Toggenburger, Park’n Plug’s Business Development Manager.
